Jack Walkers Make Great Interns

Jack Walkers Make Great Interns

Not all of our Jack Walkers are out giving tours this summer! In fact, a few of them are actually taking the next step in their college career by participating in various internships throughout the summer! We all know that internships are a big step into helping you decide if this career path is something you want to continue moving forward with, or if you may need to reconsider your future. Luckily, here at SFASU, our college gives us plenty of hands-on-experience to help prepare us for our internship before making that next step. This gives us the opportunity to become more professional, as well as to get a feel for how this career field works. This summer we have three Jack Walkers who are participating in internships throughout Texas, let's take a look into what they'll be up to this summer!

Bobby Morris:

Bobby is a Hospitality Administration major from Austin, TX. He is interning at the Crown Colony Country Club in Lufkin, TX.

What do you do at your internship?
"What’s really cool about my internship is that I get to do a little bit of everything within the Country Club. I get to work the administrative side, accounting, human resources, membership development, and club communications. I get to work on the service side as well, so I get to work with banquets and catering, the grill, and our outside pool service. And I also get to work our golf pro shop and our fitness and training center."

Do you feel like this internship has helped prepare you for your future career?

"Yes!! Since I am a hospitality major, this internship gives me a great foot in the door as far as gaining experience in the field and really being able to see what it’s like in the real world as far as working in the hospitality industry! This internship does pertain to what I want to do in that while I’m interning I get to work with our Banquet manager Angie, who books all of our events and helps to plan everything. I would eventually like to me a meeting/event planner of some kind so being at the Country Club gives me great exposure to that."

Jake Miserak:

Jake is a Communications Studies major from Prosper, TX. He is interning at Guild Mortgage at their new Legacy Branch location.
What do you do at your internship?
"I am the Business Development/Marketing Coordinator for Guild Legacy Branch. My job is to coordinate with clients and partners of Guild to help promote our branch, (sense it is still so new, it's not even a year old.) I also market all material and programs our company has to offer. I have been busy with setting up social media platforms to gain attraction for our company by promoting Guild products, and making sure everything is following the Corporate compliance guidelines. Considering this company is still brand new, all of the Loan Officers at this branch have transferred from other companies, and I have been helping them learn the marketing material while also updating their professional Facebook and Linked-in pages."

Do you feel like this internship has helped prepare you for your future career?

"With my Communications degree, I knew I would be able to obtain various jobs opportunities but I never thought I would be working in the Mortgage business. The opportunity to work for Guild and to gain a lot of hands-on-experience was very inviting, and that's exactly what I'm getting here. This company puts me through scenarios, theories, and lessons that have given me the opportunity to utilize my classroom knowledge and experiences everyday, and it's been nothing but fun! People may think it's boring to sit at a desk all day but I am never bored. I am always doing outreach to clients and partners. I work in a laid-back office atmosphere with such a great team. This experience has shown me that I can apply my communications degree to any industry I want, and that my skill set is very valuable to companies in an innovative and digital age."

Jairo Mendez:

Jairo is a Communication Studies major from Houston, TX. He is interning at ATM Cargo Holdings, Inc. in Houston, TX!

What is ATM Cargo?
"It is a shipping company working with the Port of Houston and Port of Galveston. We export oversize loads and special equipment internationally. ATM has branches in Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, California, and New York. We ship once a week and have shipping contracts with big name cargo companies such as the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) which is the second largest shipping company globally, also we work with DOLE which is the largest shipping company in the southern region of the country."

What do you do at your internship?

"As an intern I get to work in the accounting department, as well as be a representative for the company and solving issues with US customs on a weekly basis.

This internship helps me develop more of an understanding on how maritime business and international trade works. As a career I want to work in this field, because the cheapest mode of transportation is by sea and having a full understanding of international trade will allow me to expand in this field and hopefully land me a spot in upper management working with other ports on an international level."

Do you feel like this internship has helped prepare you for your future career?

"As a communication studies major and a minor in general business my goal is to essentially own businesses. From real estate, maritime business, and general investment I love the aspect of business and negotiating. Which ties in well with my choices of studies."

Katie Higgins:

Katie is a Hospitality major from Flower Mound, TX. She is interning at The Omni Amelia Island Plantation in Florida!

What do you do at your internship?

"I am a food and beverage intern. I alternate between 10 separate outlets each week to gain further knowledge on their food and beverage industry. I work closely with management staff to see how these operations run!"

Do you feel like this internship has helped prepare you for your future career?

"This internship gives me an overall picture of what I will be doing once I graduate. Seeing the management side of things has been a challenge but has given me perspective on how I want to be a leader on the workforce and in life!"

Top 5 Places to Study on Campus

Top 5 Best Places to Study on Campus:

Summer I is right around the corner (literally, they start in 3 days), and summer vacation is steadily ending for some of us. Although this means we'll be getting back into the swing of school, that doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing! We figured to make the transition from summer vacation to school easier, a few Jack Walkers could share some of their favorite study places on campus!

1.)

Of course we had to start with the most popular place to study on campus, the Ralph W. Steen Library! Summer hours for the library are listed below.

                                                    Monday - Thursday: 7:00 a..m - 9:00 p.m.
                                                    Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
                                                    Saturday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
                                                    Sunday: 12:00 p.m. (noon) - 9:00 p.m.

2.)

Next we have Starbucks! We all know we'll be needing an extra boost of caffeine to start our days, so why not take a few notes up to the balcony and enjoy the summer breeze! Summer hours for Starbucks include:
                                                    Monday - Thursday: 7:30 a..m - 8:00 p.m.
                                                    Friday: 7:00 a.m. - 2:30 p.m.
                                                    Saturday: Closed
                                                    Sunday: Closed

3.)

The SFASU Mast Arboretum and Azalea Garden. If you have never walked the trails of the Azalea Gardens, I encourage you to do so this summer! They have several seating areas including benches and swings, all of which are perfect for some small reading. They also have beautiful scenic trails that are perfect for study break walks! You'll really gain a new appreciation for SFA after experiencing these!

4.)

Try Snuggling up in your hammock out by the Ag pond! This is a very relaxing way to finish reading up some notes or a chapter in your textbook! Also, this is the perfect spot on campus for a little down time: fishing, napping, and even Netflixing (yes, the Wifi reaches out here!) If you do not own a hammock, Walmart in Nacogdoches sells cheap outdoor hammocks in the outdoor section, so secure yours now!

5.)

Don't miss out on catching a summer tan! Go relax by the Campus Recreation pool!! We'll even provide you with a few "study by the pool" tips!
  • Laminate your note cards, or conceal them in a Ziploc baggie so you can study while in the lazy river!
  • Have an online class? Bring some headphones and listen to your online lecture while sunbathing!
Summer pool hours at the Campus Rec are shown below!

                                                    Monday - Thursday: 10:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

                                                    Friday: 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.
                                                    Saturday: 12:00 p.m. (noon) - 8:00 p.m.
                                                    Sunday: 12:00 p.m. (noon) - 8:00 p.m.
