Study Tips

First Exam Study Tips
First exams are right around the corner here at Stephen F. Austin State University, so we decided to help out our peers by offering various study techniques that a few of our Jack Walkers implement in their classes! Check them out!

Bailie:
"Start studying for the material at LEAST two weeks in advance, I promise you will thank yourself later for not cramming the night before. Go ask your professor/SI/personal tutor questions if the material does not make sense to you, EVEN IF YOU THINK YOU LOOK DUMB for doing so because I promise you're the smartest one for asking. Go to SI. If you didn't do well on that first exam, go talk to your professor and ask if they have any advice for you, and most importantly change the way you studied if your first technique didn't work. RELAX."

Clarissa:
"Study the material at least 24 hours after you have learned it! Use Flash cards, and teach a friend! Also, try and record the lecture if your professor allows you."

Deion:
"Go over your notes after each lecture, so you can highlight important information, organize your notes, and summarize the lecture enough to gain a whole understanding of what your professor covered in class."

Holly:
"Quizlet is your BFF. Find a good study partner/group. Do NOT Cram! Do not be afraid to ask for help from the professor."

Graham:
"Start looking over and studying the material a week in advance. Go to SI to get any additional study techniques they might have to offer to help you prepare better for that specific course."

Jake:
"Don't do what others do when studying, do what works FOR YOU! Flash cards don't always work for everyone. Take an evaluation on how YOU study best and do what is best for you! Work smarter not harder!"

Nathalia:
"I print off all my notes before class that way I take notes over any additional notes my professor may verbally state in class.
Once I get home, I rewrite all of my notes from class and make a new power point from my stuff that I rewrote just to keep my stuff organized! I also print off my syllabus and place it in the front of my notes so I know when all of my exams are."

Zane:
"Print the PowerPoints out before class if available on D2L and take notes on what the professor says rather than what is on the slides in class."

How has getting involved changed your college experience?

"Getting involved was the best decision I ever made. Throughout high school I was very active in various organizations and community events. Once I started college, I knew that my main focus HAD to be on school and grades, especially if I wanted to excel for higher education. After dedicating my entire my freshman year to school, I was not only mentally and physically drained but I also realized that making friends wasn't as easy as it was for me in high school. I made a list of goals for myself when I entered into my second year of college, and one of those goals was to get involved! After my first year in an organization, I definitely became a changed person! My grades excelled and I felt happier. By getting involved on campus, I not only became introduced to several amazing people and opportunities to represent my university, but I also have made several 'happy memories to hold' onto for forever. Getting involved made me into the person I am today."

How has getting involved changed your college experience?

"Initially, I didn't get involved at SFA and I came to find the school not as interesting. I was consistently finding myself watching Netflix in my room or studying in the library, becoming the typical "loner" in college. I had a few friends and didn't branch out much. After my first semester I was debating on going home until my mom convinced me to stay and join an organization. During the first week of Spring 2015, I decided to rush Delta Tau Delta. Through the fraternity I met a multitude of well-rounded individuals who were involved all over campus. I was able to learn about the organizations my brothers were involved in and even joined the ones I found interesting, including Jack Walkers and Jack Camp. Getting involved was easily the most pivotal moment in my college career because it helped me gain friends, confidence, and many other skills that help me in every day life. My advice to any incoming freshman at ANY university is to find an organization to get involved in so they can meet like-minded individuals and learn the skills to help them succeed throughout life."

Julianna:
*Julianna, wearing white in the picture.
Although Julianna spends the majority of her time as a Nursing Student for Stephen F. Austin State University, she also dedicates a few hours to the following:

- A Jack Walker
- Fine Arts Liason

How has getting involved changed your college experience?

"My first semester of college, I literally drove to my hometown, Longview, every single weekend. I didn't know anyone at SFA, so I left Nacogdoches to avoid feeling lonely on the weekends when I wasn't in class. My second semester is when I actually started getting involved with campus organizations. I started meeting new people and going to campus events. I felt less lonely since I was building a new community around me. This foundation of people I built getting my first undergrad degree is what ultimately caused me to come back to Nacogdoches to pursue my second degree in Nursing and what made me feel most at ease when I signed a contract to work at an area hospital for three years after I graduate from Nursing school. I still get to go visit my family in Longview, but I'm definitely proud to call Nacogdoches my new home."

Kassidy:

Kassidy has been involved in:

- Chi Omega Sorority
- A Jack Walker
- Jack Camp Counselor
- Intramural Sports

How has getting involved changed your college experience?

"in high school I was involved in pretty much everything my school had to offer. So I wanted to bring that into my college career. In college, I have met so many people I never thought I would meet, With that, it's held me accountable for leadership positions and made me a better person. Later as my career flourishes and as I start to apply for internships and jobs, I'll have enormous amounts of references that I can chose from, just from being involved."
