Lights, Camera, Action!

Some of the most inspiring students at SFA are creating their very own cinematic masterpieces, within the program of filmmaking. Filmmaking is the perfect major for those who aspire to learn techniques in production, camera operation, screenwriting, or directing. From the moment our students start their filmmaking journey, they are immersed into a world of creativity. The School of Art prepares these students with the fundamental basics they will need to successfully master their advanced courses.
As a filmmaking student, you will also enjoy many afternoons screening films, commercials, and documentaries in SFA's cozy cinematography building, located on the south side of campus. The filmmaking program provides fantastic opportunities for our Lumberjacks to showcase their film work in festivals nearby and all over the nation. Often times, you will work as a team with fellow students in your classes and find yourself in the most interesting places, while filming.

Within the Arthur Temple College of Forestry there are wide range of major choices that suit our most environmentally conscious students at Stephen F. Austin State University. Fortunately for our Lumberjacks, the SFA campus is surrounded by miles of east Texas forests, which creates a perfect environment for a student majoring in forestry. The four undergraduate programs dedicated to Forestry are Forest Management, Forest Wildlife Management, General Forestry, and Spatial Sciences. This major also accommodates those who are interested in online and distance learning.
One of the things we find most interesting about this major is the historical and greatly successful student organization, the SFA Sylvans. The Sylvans were created at SFA in 1946 and compete against other schools around the nation in technical and physical events related to Forestry (archery, axe throwing, log chopping, pole climbing, compass and passing, etc.). Our very own Jack Walker, Grant Korbel, is an avid Sylvan and won first place in a competition this past year for DBH estimation. These students are truly living the Lumberjack experience.

Making the Guest Feel at Home

Within the fun-filled major of Hospitality Administration you have the option to focus in four areas of this specific study (Lodging, Meeting Planning, Travel and Tourism, and Restaurant). Students encounter a wide range of hands on experiences within the culinary cafe on campus and the Hospitality Administration Society. Students involved in this unique organization are able to volunteer for events around the East Texas area for more work experience and networking opportunities. If you aspire to own your own successful restaurant, become a manager for a five-star hotel, or become the next Event Coordinator for a big city convention center, then hospitality is the major for you!

"This is how we do it!"

Here are a few of our Jack Walkers out and about for Homecoming 2013! Friday night the Traditions Council and Student Activities Association hosted our annual bonfire at the Intramural Fields. Everyone showed up to enjoy the fire, watch the amazing fireworks show, and listen to some Texas country music from Kevin Fowler. This is always one of our favorite nights of the year.
Saturday morning, many of the Jack Walker participated in the Homecoming Parade in downtown Nacogdoches. Matt Logan, student regent, led the parade right behind President Baker Patillo. Multiple other Jack Walkers rode on floats that they decorated by their other on campus organizations (Phi Theta Gamma, Alpha Chi Omega, and Delta Tau Delta). This year's homecoming theme was 90's, so all the floats were filled with tons of memories from our childhood and SFA traditions celebrating 90 years of SFA!
Once the tailgating started, everyone was in purple and ready to watch our SFA Lumberjacks axe the Colonels. SFA won, 55-41!
All around, it was a fantastic weekend!

Jack Walker Highlight: Matthew Logan

Hello everyone! My name is Matthew Logan, I am from Mansfield, TX, and I am a Senior studying Hospitality Administration with a focus in Travel & Tourism.

Throughout my Lumberjack Experience, I have been involved in the Freshmen Leadership Academy, Student Activities Association, Orientation Programs, Night Manager at Student Center, and the Jack Walker Program. My most recent accomplishment was accepting the position to serve one year term on the Board of Regents as the Student Regent.

As the Student Regent, it is be my responsibility to share the point of view of the SFA students to the Regents. During the meetings, when a students’ opinion is needed, I will have the opportunity to voice the students’ opinions and they will be considered when an important decision is made.

I just returned from Austin, Texas to attend the Student Regent training seminar. I am thrilled to serve on the board and represent the student body for our university.

My appointment to the board.

Nacogdoches Blueberry Festival

This past weekend was Blueberry Festival! Every year Nacogdoches closes downtown for blueberry lemonade, vendors and rides out to the blueberry farm. This year Grant Korbel (Jack Walker) and I had a great time and ate way too many blueberries! So, if you are ever in town over the summer, be sure to check out this fun festival in the heart of our town.

Mud Volleyball at Springfest!

This past weekend, fellow senior Jack Walker Jessica Layfield and I participated in the annual SFA Mud Volleyball Tournament hosted by Student Foundations Association. If you are thinking “hmm, that sounds like so much fun”…you are certainly right! This was Jessica’s fourth year to play and my first! We got to play with so many great teams and we did very well. Each team consisted of six players and as each game passed you would move up in the winner’s bracket or the losers bracket. We won 2 games and lost 2 but it was an incredible experience and in between games we also had the chance to eat some delicious crawfish! So moral of the story when you make it to SFA make sure you give mud volleyball a go because no matter how long it takes to get all the mud off it is so worth it!

British Virgin Island Guests Come to Visit Campus

I had the privilege of giving a special group tour to a Rotary Club visiting from the British Virgin Islands. We rode around campus, in style, in our 6 sweater golf cart! The tour was very impressed with our Student Recreation Center and loved our outdoor pool that they called "resort style". They enjoyed a picture Surfin' Steve, where they learned our signature hand sign! This tour was so much fun and was quite educational for both myself, about the British Virgin Islands, and for the tour about all that SFA has to offer!

Lumberjacks in Florida!

During the week of April 8, the SFA spirit teams traveled to Daytona Beach, FL to compete in the NCA/NDA Collegiate National Championship Competition. Jack Walkers in attendance of Nationals were Lauren Probus, who is a member of the large coed cheerleading team, Blake Taylor and Sydney Thorne, who are the SFASU Lumberjack and Ladyjack mascots, and loyal supporters of the SFA Spirit Teams, Paige Miller and Cameron Holloway. Blake and Sydney did a fantastic job and most of our teams placed in the top 3 at the competition. Here the Jack Walkers pose for a picture at the Ocean Walk Center Plaza right by the beach. Jack Walkers at Fort Worth

Last Thursday through Saturday, the SFA Student Publications department attended the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association competition and conference in downtown Fort Worth. The students who attended represented The Pine Log, the student newspaper at SFASU, and The Stone Fort, the yearbook at SFASU. Among those who attended were two Jack Walkers: Grant Korbel, a Pine Log photographer, and Jessica Layfield, Pine Log copy editor and Stone Fort yearbook editor-in-chief.

"I had a great time at TIPA. We got to compete in several different journalism, photography and design competitions, and I was able to attend workshops about different career paths in journalism," Jessica said.

Grant, another photographer and the Pine Log editor all took home first place for the photos and design of this year's Homecoming page in the paper.

Jessica took home second place in the copy editing competition, and several other staff members won or placed in their on-site competitions or for their previously submitted work.

Congratulations to Jessica and Grant for their success!!

Jack Walkers on Spring Break!

This spring break I went to New Orleans, LA! The city is a constant adventure and kept us busy with plenty of shopping, music, and fun-filled scenery. The town was sprinkled with purple and the gorgeous weather made it possible for us to stay outside for the majority of our days. I can't wait to go back!
-Erika Bazaldua, International Business Junior

This spring break, me and my boyfriend Blake went to the Houston Rodeo to see Kenny Chesney. It was really fun for the night, however, the next day I woke up with food poisoning and spent the afternoon in the Hospital! Thankfully, I'm all better now!
-Sami Vrana, Communication Sciences and Disorders Junior

My family and I went hiking in the Ozarks! It was a lot of fun, my Mom had recently purchased a vintage Airstream travel trailer and this was its maiden voyage.
-Sierra Zeringue, Mental Health Counseling Graduate Student

During the break I was finally able to spend time with my lovely godson! He is an amazing athlete and makes me very proud! It doesn't matter what we do, where we go, or where we are- every moment that I get to share with him is special. We would take turns visiting each other during the break, and he is such a goofball it took 3 tries to even get a picture with him! He kept doing silly expressions and dogding the camera- I finally gave up. Here we are in my room, I look a little lost and he is trying to hide behind his soup!
-Sandra Ramirez, Spanish Sophmore

And last but never least:
Ryan Horne – Fearless leader of the Jack Walkers!
For Spring Break 2013 I took my family to the happiest place on Earth, Disney World!! Here I am as a guard for the beautiful Princess Belle.
My wife and I ran into fellow Lumberjacks there!
Conquered Everest.
Enjoyed my time with my little princess.

And just sat back and enjoyed the Magic Kingdom!
